Ask Jamie: Toddler Friendly Lunch Ideas

Typically, I answer a reader’s question and then throw it back your way. Today, I have a question for you that I hope you can help me out with!

I am trying to compose a list of toddler friendly lunch ideas — preferably easy to prepare and healthy. Please leave your ideas in the comments and I will move them to the body of the post for everyone to read and share.

1. English Muffin Pizzas (Serves 2)
Split two whole wheat English muffins. Top each half with 2 Tbsp of pizza sauce, 2 turkey pepperonis, and enough mozzarella cheese to cover. Broil at 350 for 5 minutes. Serve with a side of steamed broccoli and fruit for dessert.

2. Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup (Serves 2)
Heat soup – we prefer Amy’s Organic Creamy Tomato. Butter one side of four pieces of whole wheat bread. Take a Kraft single and place one between each piece of bread (I like the Fat-Free singles). Grill on the stove.

Friday’s Feature at Sticky Feet Part Deux is Ask Jamie. Feel free to email me or leave a comment with any question you would like for me to answer. Anything is fair game!

  1. Scrambled eggs with some shredded cheese mixed in are a big hit around here. In the microwave, it take less than a minute and a half.

  2. Pick one day and bake like 4-5 sweet potatoes so you have them all ready to go. Cut them up (cold is fine) LM can eat a whole sweet potato in one sitting and it is so easy because all I have to do is take it out of the fridge and cut it up.

  3. Great idea Jamie! I actually have a list of lunches to help me think on my feet with the nanny in the morning. Baked ricotta: Put ricotta and shredded vegetables in a ramekin. Bake at 350 until lightly browned on top. Top with a little tomato sauce. Stir Fry: tofu, brown rice, mixed veggies (I use frozen veggies to simplify) sauteed in a hot pan. Hummus and pita with a side of steamed vegatables. Mac & cheese with broccoli (and maybe a little ham)- make a sauce out of yogurt, shredded cheddar cheese and parmesan and butter- you just add it to the hot macaroni. Frozen spinach ravioli- either with tomato sauce or butter and parmesan. Egg salad sandwich: try to toss in som e shredded veggies. Spinach dip- spinach, cumin, yogurt and a little mayonaise, spread on good whole grain bread, steamed carrots for dipping on the side. Also like to throw edamame on ths side a lot for the good protein content.

  4. wow, cute ideas. I don't have any suggestions because Bree always ate whatever I made for supper. I didn't make anything special, just for her.

  5. pigs in a blanket

    hotdogs
    crescent rolls

roll hotdog inside crescent roll and cook according to crescent roll directions.

    Pita Pockets

    pita pocket
    ham, or any meat
    cheese
bean sprouts, lettuce or any veggies

stuff your pita pocket with your favorite lunch foods and serve.

    Tortilla Wraps

    6 inch flour tortillas
    sandwich spread
    meat of your choosing
veggies of your choosing like lettuce, tomatoes
    cheese

have the kids spread the tortilla with sandwich spread and put their favorite toppings on. Roll the tortilla up into a wrap and enjoy.
(I do this with PB&J as well, less messy and easier for toddlers to hold)

  6. Jordyn is a fan of almond butter on wheat bread. I take one slice of bread, cut the crusts so its in a nice square and then spread the almond butter on one side and fold in half. i then break it in half and she has 2 little pieces. she also loves refried beans spread on a flour tortilla and rolled up. also, if you haven't tried these, look for morningstar farms veggie bites in your freezer section at the supermarket. we like the spinach artichoke and broccoli cheddar. they are like chicken nuggets but veggie. can't wait to read more ideas!!

  7. great ideas, and Keifer LOVES Morningstar farms Veggie corn dogs- mini ones- LOVES THEM! (for a quick idea)

she also loves string cheese and yogurt, LOL- that would be a meal all in itself if she could!
